La Salle Picks Up Win Over San Diego State

from press release

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's lacrosse team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 10-8 win over San Diego State on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.

Junior Melanie Sarcinello and freshman Claire Andrews each added hat tricks for La Salle. Senior Megan Corliss had 11 saves in goal.

The Explorers (7-2) extend their win streak to three games.

For San Diego State (3-6), Bailey Ewing had three goals and an assist.

San Diego State got on the board first after an unassisted goal by Ewing with 23:21 on the clock. She would add another goal almost a minute later to give the Aztecs a 2-0 advantage.

After senior Rachel Baker caused a turnover, Sarcinello had a nice look, but the Aztec's Sammy Slattery made the save to keep San Diego in front.

Andrews broke La Salle's scoring drought, scoring two straight goals, the second assisted by freshman Kelly Furman, to even the game at 2-all with 17:25 on the clock.

The rest of the half went back-and-fourth.

Junior Jackie Roebuck put the Explorers ahead 3-2 after a free position goal at 14:03.

However, San Deigo State won the ensuing draw and scored to even the contest back up at 3-all.

Junior Lauren McDermott won the next draw for the Explorers and Sarcinello put the ball past the keeper to put the Explorers back in front 4-3 at 11:34. The game was tied again after Ewing scored her third tally of the day for the Aztecs with 7:42 on the clock.

Andrews and McDermott then both scored as the minutes ticked away on the half.

After a last-second goal by the Aztecs, the score was 6-5 in favor of the Explorers at halftime.

It was all La Salle to start the second half, with Furman, McDermott and Sarcinello adding goals less than ten minutes in to give the Explorers their largest lead of the game at 9-5.

San Diego State would score its first goal of the second half off a free position shot with 18:58 on the clock.

Sarcinello added La Salle's final goal of the game with 17:50 left to play to put the Explorers ahead 10-6.

The Aztecs then scored two goals in the final fifteen minutes of the game to make the final tally 10-8 in favor of the Explorers.

Sarcinello picked up a game-leading four ground balls, while McDermott won four draws.

La Salle will open its Atlantic 10 season by welcoming Duquesne to McCarthy Stadium on Friday evening.
