Siena Inches Closer to MAAC Tourney, Beats Niagara
from press release
Michelle Andreo scored four consecutive Siena goals midway through the game, leading the Saints to a pivotal 13-11 MAAC victory over Niagara Wednesday in Western New York. With the win, the Saints evened their conference record and are right in the thick of the hunt for a spot in the MAAC Tournament.
With the win the Saints (4-9, 2-2) moved into sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings with just two MAAC games remaining. The top-four teams qualify for the MAAC Championships Apr. 27-29 in Buffalo.
Just over nine minutes into the game, the Saints quickly broke open a 2-2 tie. Shannon Pfohl and Deirdre McQuillan scored 16 seconds apart, giving the Saints a 4-2 lead and they would not trail again.
Niagara (3-7, 0-3) hung around throughout and never trailed by more than three goals the rest of the way, but could not overcome the deficit.
Andreo created distance for Siena, scoring her four goals in a span of just 11 minutes and 28 seconds. McQuillan added two goals giving her 100 for her career, making her just the fourth player in program history to reach the century mark.
Pfohl finished with three points and Katie Maguire added a pair of goals and five draw controls as the Saints beat Niagara for the third straight year and fifth time in the past six meetings.
Emily French led Niagara with four points, scoring all three of her goals on free-position attempts. Fran Pollastro, Caitlin Sacco and Nicole Karek all added a pair of goals for the Purple Eagles.
