Siena Beats Iona to Move Up in MAAC

from press release

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Already the winningest class in program history, Siena's seniors earned another key victory on Senior Day. Senior Deirdre McQuillan netted a hat trick including the game-winning goal as the Saints defeated Iona 8-6 to take over sole possession of second place in the MAAC Standings. Additionally with the win head coach Andrea Duffy became the winningest coach in program history.

Winners of a three in a row, the Saints (5-9, 3-2) have rebounded strong and are peaking at just the right time after beginning the season with six straight losses. Although they did not yet clinch their third straight MAAC Tournament appearance, the Saints definitely took a step in the right direction Saturday.

After allowing the first goal of the game, Siena netted the next three tallies and never trailed again. After Iona (8-6, 2-2) tied things 4-4 early in the second half, the Saints put together another three-goal run to put the game away.

McQuillan capped the run with the game-winning tally. Earlier, she moved passed Stephanie Petrucelli `04 for third place on the program's all-time scoring charts.

Classmate Michelle Andreo added two goals and an assist and Maggie Deloria contributed two goals for the Saints. Kristin Concordia had arguably her finest performance of the season in goal, registering 10 saves and picked up three groundballs.

Iona drew 34 Siena fouls to the Saints' 14 but was unable to capitalize on their opportunities. The Gaels converted on just one of their nine free-position shots, while Siena scored on two of three 8-meter opportunities.

Emily Taddei led Iona with a balanced two goals, six groundballs and three draw controls. The Saints did though hold the MAAC's leading scorer Kylie Gregory at bay as she managed just two quiet points.

Siena has one conference game remaining, but first will step out of league for a tune-up Tuesday vs. Binghamton. The Saints host the Bearcats at 4 p.m. at Siena Turf Field.
