Oregon Win Sets Up Ducks-Denver Showdown

MORAGA, Calif.-- The University of Oregon lacrosse team added one more win to their perfect MPSF slate as they defeated Saint Mary's, 16-8, on Sunday afternoon at the SMC Recreation Field in Moraga, Calif.
With the win, the Ducks moved to 11-4 overall and 6-0 in the MPSF, making the match between Oregon and Denver on Apr. 21 in Eugene the setting for an epic battle for first place with the MPSF Tournament looming Apr. 27-29 at Stanford.
UO raced out to the 2-0 lead behind goals from seniors Kristina Barrett and Jana Drummond, but SMC's Amanda Cross put the Gaels on the board with 12 minutes elapsed in the match.
The Ducks went back on the attack, tallying four straight goals to take a 6-1 advantage at the halfway point in the first stanza.
The Gaels (2-10, 0-5 MPSF) struck for back-to-back goals though, bringing the match to a 6-3 standing.
Oregon got two more goals from sophomores Shannon Propst and Nikki Puszcz and brought an 8-4 lead into the locker room.
The Ducks opened up the half by putting up consecutive goals from sophomore Hayley Milner off the pass from Puszcz and from Puszcz off the dish from Barrett to reach the double-digit goal plateau for the fifth straight match, which have all been victories.
UO's next two scores came off the stick of Barrett, giving the Ducks a 12-4 advantage with less than 13 minutes left in the match.
The Ducks and Gaels traded goals back and forth, but scores by Puszcz, Propst and junior Maggie Kovacs sealed the win for Oregon.
Barrett led UO with four goals while Puszcz and Propst followed up with three. The Ducks also got two goals each from Drummond and Kovacs. Barrett and Puszcz were also responsible for assists on three goals each.
Cross tallied four goals and an assist to pace the Gaels.
Sophomore Caroline Federighi (11-3) and junior Salliebeth Finnegan split halves in goal with Federighi picking up the win behind an six-save outing. Finnegan was solid in the second half, recording five saves.
Despite stopping a match-high 11 shots, Kassandra Lemons took the loss.
The Ducks now move to 11-0 all-time against the Gaels.
The match between Oregon and Denver will serve as Senior Day with action from Pape' Field beginning at 1 p.m.
