Surging Siena Women Win Fourth Straight Game

from press release

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Siena women's lacrosse has proven that it's not how you start, but rather how you finish. After beginning the season with six straight defeats, the surging Saints won their fourth in a row Tuesday afternoon 8-6 over Binghamton at Siena Turf Field.

Siena (6-9) set the tone in the first half, out-shooting Binghamton (3-10) 16-8 and held a 12-4 edge in groundballs. Michelle Andreo netted a hat trick and all four of her points in the opening stanza as the Saints appeared to be well on their way to victory.

But Bearcats goalie Kara Pafumi was the equalizer in the first half, making seven key saves as the Saints held a slim 5-4 advantage heading into the lockerroom despite dominating play.

Momentum shifted towards Binghamton in the second half, but goalie Kristin Concordia kept the Saints on top. She made six of her seven saves in the final period to preserve the lead.

The Bearcats rallied to within 7-6 with 5:18 remaining, but Katie Maguire completed her hat trick with 1:16 left to ice it. Deirdre McQuillan added two goals and an assist for the Saints, but it was Concordia and the defense that again made the difference.

During the Saints' four-game winning streak, the team has allowed just 6.8 goals per game and Concordia has stopped 54.4% of the shots she has faced. Over the first 11 games of the season, Siena allowed 15.2 goals per game.

Pafumi finished with 11 saves for Binghamton and Kimberly McGeever led the offense with a goal and two assists. Lauren Lukefahr was also strong on defense causing four turnovers and picking up four groundballs, but it wasn't enough as Binghamton dropped their sixth straight.

Siena can tie its longest winning streak in program history Saturday in the regular season finale, but it won't be easy. With a spot in the MAAC Tournament still on the line, the Saints face first place Fairfield at 3:30 p.m. in Connecticut.
