Princeton Women Knock Off No. 8 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Princeton women's lacrosse team earned a big win over No. 8 Penn State on Saturday, April 28 winning 13-12 in overtime in the regular season finale.

Junior Charlotte Davis scored the winning goal with 17 seconds left in the first overtime.

Junior Jaci Gassaway had a six-point effort with five goals and one assist. Freshman Erin McMunn had one goal and three assists for four points. Davis tallied a hat trick while senior Barb Previ had two goals. Freshman netminder Annie Woehling made six stops in net.

Penn State opened the game with three straight goals before Princeton settled in and Gassaway scored twice and senior Previ had one all within three minutes to knot the game at 3-3 at the end of one.

The Tigers weren't done yet scoring the first three goals of the second half to take a 6-3 lead. Junior defender Caroline Rehfuss, Gassaway and Davis all put up tallies in the first 3:15.

Tatum Coffey briefly interrupted the Princeton run with a goal at 25:53 before sophomore Sarah Lloyd, Gassaway and Davis scored to give the Tigers a 9-4 edge 22:38.

In total Princeton went on a 9-1 run from 13:22 of the first to 22:38 of the second a span of 20:44.

PSU started its comeback at 21:54 when Aly Adams and Mackenzie Cyr to make it 9-6.

Previ converted a free-position attempt at 17:17 but Maggie McCormick and Kelly Lechner each scored to cut the deficit to two, 10-8.

McMunn scored the Tigers' final goal of regulation at 10:38 before the Nittany Lions scored three straight included two in the final two minutes to force overtime.

Gassaway buried a feed from McMunn to get Princeton ahead in the non-sudden victory overtime. Less than a minute later McCormick evened the game at 12-12.

Shots were nearly even in the game with Penn State taking a slight edge 28-25. Penn State had the upper hand in the first half 13-8, both teams had 14 in the second and Princeton had a 3-1 edge in OT. Princeton won 16 of 28 draws, and Penn State won three more ground balls, 19-16.

McCormick led PSU with four goals and two assists for six points. Cyr had three points on two goals and one assists. Molly Fernandez and Lechner both tallied twice. Dana Cahill made eight saves in goal.
