Syracuse Women Release Schedule
from press release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's lacrosse team and head coach Gary Gait will face seven teams that advanced to last season's NCAA Tournament in 2012, including national champion Northwestern and runner-up Maryland. In addition, the Orange will play Harvard in Gillette Stadium, home of the NFL's New England Patriots and two-time host of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship.
"Once again we will have the toughest non-conference schedule in the country," Gait said. "We will play nine of the 13 teams ranked ahead of us in this year's Face-Off Yearbook preseason poll, including five of the top 10."
The Orange's first action in 2012 will be an exhibition game against Team England at Disney World on Jan. 28. Syracuse opens the season on Feb. 21 against Boston College in the Carrier Dome. Following a trip to Virginia on Feb. 26, Syracuse hosts defending national champion Northwestern on Feb. 29. SU will play at Florida (Mar. 3) and national finalist Maryland (Mar. 10) before returning home to face Towson on Mar. 23.
Syracuse opens BIG EAST play at Connecticut on Mar. 24 before facing Harvard in Gillette Stadium on March 31. The game is part of a doubleheader, with Northwestern and Ohio State facing off in the second game.
"We are excited about playing in Gillette Stadium, but we're also excited about this showcase event that will have a format and atmosphere similar to the Final Four," Gait said.
The Orange plays at Notre Dame (Apr. 5) before returning home for three consecutive games in the Carrier Dome against Rutgers (Apr. 7), Dartmouth (Apr. 9) and Georgetown (Apr. 14). SU takes on Central New York rival Cornell in Ithaca on Apr. 17 before going to Louisville (Apr. 20) and Cincinnati (Apr. 22).
Syracuse ends the regular season with home contests against Loyola (Apr. 27) and Villanova (Apr. 29). The Orange will host the BIG EAST Championship on May 3 and 5. It marks the second time the league tournament has been played in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse hosted the inaugural conference championship in 2007.
The Orange, which is ranked No. 14 in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook preseason poll, returns nine starters from last year's squad that posted a 10-8 record and tied for the BIG EAST regular-season title. In addition, four of SU's top five scorers from a year are back, including leading scorer Michelle Tumolo (Mullica Hill, N.J.).
