No. 14 UMass Rolls Past Long Island

AMHERST, Mass. - Twelve different players
scored goals as the No. 14 UMass women's lacrosse team cruised past
Long Island 21-8 on Saturday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium. The
Minutewomen tallied 16 assists as a team which is tied as the
seventh-most in a single-game in NCAA history and marks a program
best. UMass improved to 2-1 on the year, while Long Island dropped
its season-opening game.
Katie Ferris led all players with five points and was one of three Minutewomen with three goals. Sam Rush netted three goals on an efficient three shots and Tanner Guarino scored three and added an assist. Lauren Terracciano led all players with four assists. Kelsey McGovern was one draw control shy of the single-game record at UMass with 11 on the day. She was just one shy of Meghan Reddy's 12 draw controls set twice in 2009.
In goal, Rachel Vallarelli earned the win making three first half saves. Jamie Schiloski and Meaghan Kollmeier split the second half with each making one save.
Long Island was led by Shakoya Smith and Caitlin Farrell who each scored three goals and added an assist. Gina Haber took the loss giving up 18 of the 21 goals while making six saves.
Paced by McGovern, UMass controlled possession throughout the game starting with the draw. The Minutewomen won 20-of-30 draw controls and had a 26-to-17 edge in groundballs. Defensive, UMass forced the Black Birds into 24 turnovers - most of which were in transition as Long Island was just 6-of-18 on clears.
UMass jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead just over four minutes into the game. The Minutewomen went up 15-4 at halftime thanks to Katie Ott's second goal of the period.
The second half saw the Minutewomen jump out with a three goal run to start things up taking an 18-4 lead with 22 minutes to go.
UMass closed the game with three Minutewomen picking up their first goals of the season in Paige Morelli, Mary Pat Theofield and Nicole Troost to round out the scoring.
The Minutewomen will return to action next Saturday at New Hampshire with the opening draw set for 1 PM.
