No. 1 Terp Women Double Up No. 7 Penn State
from press release
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A total of 10 Terrapins
registered at least one goal Saturday as the No. 1 Maryland women's
lacrosse team handled No. 7 Penn State 20-10 at the Field Hockey
& Lacrosse Complex.
Maryland (7-0, 2-0 ACC) was led in scoring by Alex Aust and Brooke
Griffin who tallied four goals apiece as the Terps turned in one of
their most complete performances of the young season. Aust added
four assists and now has 38 points in the last four games. The
senior is one of only eight players in program history to record
100 assists. Freshman Taylor Cummings added five points on two
goals and three assists.
The Terps were running on all cylinders through the first 15
minutes of the game, outscoring Penn State (4-2) 8-1 including a
5-0 run to start the half. The first seven goals of the contest all
came courtesy of different players. Maryland capped the first
stanza - arguably its finest in 2013 - on a 4-0 tear, including an
Aust tally with time expiring for a 12-4 advantage at the half.
The Nittany Lions shrunk Maryland's lead to 13-8 with 23:50
remaining in the game but was then stifled by a stingy Terrapin
defense which held Penn State without a goal for 20 minutes down
the stretch. Meanwhile, Maryland's offense continued to roll with
seven unanswered goals, including scores from Camilla Hayes and
Taylor Salandra off the bench.
Kasey Howard led Maryland defensively with a career-best 14 saves.
The defense caused 15 Nittany Lion turnovers, led by two each from
Katie Schwarzmann, Shanna Brady and Aust. Maryland is outscoring
opponents 125-65 through the first seven games - four of which have
been against top-10 opponents.
"We went through the first half and I was really pleased with our
defense...we played better than we have been, so that's definitely
going in the right direction," head coach Cathy Reese said. "We had
a little lapse at beginning of the second half but after our
timeout I thought we regrouped and we did much better for the
remainder of the second half. We just need to put together a full
60 minutes of it, that'd be ideal."
