Marist Scores Most Goals Since '09, Downs Stetson
from press release
DeLAND, Fla. – The Marist women's lacrosse team exploded offensively in the concluding game of its Florida road trip on Thursday evening by notching a 21-8 victory at Stetson. Coming off of a contest where their offense was stymied at Jacksonville, the Red Foxes scored early and often against the Dolphins as three players, Jamie Romano, Amanda Tuck and Ashley Miller notched hat tricks and Tierney Larson registered seven total points on the strength on five assists.
The game opened even as each team netted two goals over the opening seven minutes; Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) set up goals by Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) at 28:31 and 23:29.
With the score 2-2, the Red Foxes would rattle off five unanswered goals to go up 7-2. Tuck and Romano each capped their individual hat tricks during this run; at the 14:40 mark for Romano and 14:11 for Tuck.
Stetson cut its five-goal deficit down to three at 7-4 with two straight goals at 13:06 and 10:08.
Consecutive scores by Miller and sophomore Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.) closed the first half out for Marist with a 9-4 lead.
The Red Foxes would extend that two-goal run out to nine overall with seven quick tallies over the first 9:46 to open up a 16-4 advantage. Six different Marist players would net goals over this span of action; Romano was the only Red Fox with two goals. Larson assisted on her game-high fifth assist on a Sabrina Mattera (Wantagh, N.Y.) score at 25:58. This would be the second time in three games that Larson assisted on five Marist goals in a single contest.
From 18:46 to 8:08, the teams traded goals as the score went to 18-6. After a Larson marker at 13:32, Florida native Erin Schroeder (Vero Beach, Fla.) registered her first career goal off of a free-position shot at 10:10.
Schroeder would score again less than three minutes later a 7:15 to put the Red Foxes up 19-6.
In the final five minutes of play, the freshmen class of Marist was on display as Kacey Carter (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Kaitlyn Brown (Port Washington, N.Y.) netted goals, while Brittany Tricarico (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added an assist.
After 60 minutes of play, the Red Foxes had won 21-8 and registered the most goals in four years since a March 20, 2009 matchup at Presbyterian concluded with a 21-5 score.
For the game, Marist outshot Stetson 36-15 and won 24 of 31 draws. Romano and Tuck tied for the team-high with five draw controls. In goal, senior Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) earned the win with five saves and five goals against in 41 minutes of play. With her five assists, Larson is in sole possession of the fifth-most helpers in a single season at Marist with 21.
The Red Foxes will conclude their span of five games in 11 days with a Sunday matchup at home versus Oregon, the alma mater of assistant coach Jana Bradley. The opening draw on March 24 is slated for 2 p.m.
