Second Half Surge Sends 'Nova Past Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Villanova outscored Cincinnati by an 11-4 margin in the second half to sail to a 17-7 victory over the Bearcats in Ohio on Friday afternoon. Senior Annie Fallon (Shrewsbury, N.J.) led the team with two goals and two assists while 11 different Wildcats posted points as Villanova improved to 6-9 overall and 1-6 in the conference. With the loss, Cincinnati fell to 6-9 and 0-7 in the BIG EAST, respectively.
The Wildcats took advantage of a five-goal run to bridge the first and second halves and held the Bearcats scoreless for 11:34 during that span to fuel the victory. In a defensive minded first stanza, Cincinnati notched the first score of the game before senior Maria Bowman (Ft. Belvoir, Va.) tallied two straight unassisted goals to give Villanova a 2-1 lead with just over 12 minutes left to play in the half.
Cincy's Kylie Ramsland knotted the game at 2-2 before the Wildcats increased their lead to 4-2 with scores from sophomores Jackie Froccaro (Sands Point, N.Y.) and freshman Shannon Galvin (Maplewood, N.J.). Another Cincinnati score would close the VU lead to one before Fallon and sophomore Jessica Mucci (Severna Park, Md.) tallied two more scores to end the half at 6-3 in favor of the 'Cats.
Villanova continued their dominance in the opening minutes of the second half when Fallon, Mucci and Bowman all found the back of the net just six minutes into the stanza to increase the lead to 9-3. After a Cincinnati score from Taylor Young with 23:36 on the clock Villanova would go out another three-goal run with tallies from Chelsey Henderson (West Long Branch, N.J.) and two from Shannon Lane (Annapolis, Md.) to put the Wildcats up 12-4.
The Bearcats responded with two straight goals from Marissa Pierson and Katie Kiriazoglou before the Wildcat offense found another three-goal streak from Henderson, Shawna Giust (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Ali Judge (Annapolis, Md.), who connected on a free-position attempt with just over five minutes remaining in the contest. Kylie Ramsland collected the final Bearcat goal of the game with 5:29 on the clock to close the lead to 15-7 before VU's Tierney Griff (Summit, N.J.) and Katie Collopy (Glen Rock, N.J.) solidified the win for Villanova at 17-7. Villanova dominated the contest and outshot the opponents 34-16, won the ground ball battle 17-10 and picked up 16 draw controls to Cincinnati's 10.
Defensively, Elise Bendinelli (West Chester, Pa.), Taylor Mangione (Phoenix, Md.), Fallon and Bowman each collected three ground balls while Lauren Shockley (Newtown, Pa.) caused a team-high three turnovers. In an outstanding effort, Giust tallied a career-high nine draw controls to give the Wildcats valuable possessions down the stretch. Senior Amanda Hirschfeld (Timonium, Md.) made four saves for the victory.
The Wildcats will conclude the 2013 season when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to face the Cardinals on Sunday, April 28th. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
