Undefeated Navy Women Sink Monmouth
from press release
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior attacker Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville, N.Y.) scored seven points (5G, 2A) and No. 20 Navy (4-0) used another strong defensive effort to defeat Monmouth (0-3), 16-4, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Navy held Monmouth to just one goal in the game's first 57 minutes of action.
"I was really proud of our defensive effort today. That was key for us," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "We were a little out of sync offensively in the first half so at halftime we committed to come out strong to start the second half and I think we demonstrated that. We had a solid game today."
DePompeo became the first Navy women's lacrosse player to score at least seven points in four straight games. She has amassed 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points this season.
"Jasmine is a solid player," Timchal said. "She is really leading this team offensively."
Senior attacker Kathy Young (Berwyn, Pa.) and junior attacker Aimee Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.) both chipped in with five points. Young had four goals, one assist and four draw controls. Gennaro posted two goals, three assists and a career-high seven ground balls.
Defensively, Navy held its fourth-straight opponent to seven or fewer goals this season. Navy held Monmouth to just three shots in the first half and 12 in the game.
The Mids applied constant pressure to Monmouth and the Hawks committed 20 turnovers. Navy was credited with seven caused turnovers and senior defender Emily Mellin (Sherwood, Forest) led the way with three caused turnovers.
Navy started the game on a 4-0 run, with Young scoring back-to-back goals in the first 2:42. DePompeo then scored, followed by a goal from Gennaro before Monmouth scored with 14:19 remaining in the first half to make it 4-1. Monmouth wouldn't score again for another 41:45.
Sophomore attacker Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) got Navy going again with a goal at 8:15 and then DePompeo scored back-to-back goals as Navy took a 7-1 lead into halftime.
Generi scored back-to-back goals in the first 50 seconds of the second half as the Mids stormed out of the locker room. DePompeo scored to continue the run and then freshman midfielder Miranda Beal (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored her first career goal before another DePompeo strike.
A little over a minute later, Gennaro scored again and then Young scored back-to-back goals. By the time senior attacker Morgan O'Brien (Arnold, Md.) scored at 6:36, Navy had built up a 16-1 lead on a 12-0 run.
Monmouth was able to chip into Navy's lead with three goals in the game's final 2:25.
Generi had three goals, one assist and five draw controls, as Navy won the draw control battle, 15-7. Navy also outshot Monmouth in the game 36-12 and had a 24-15 edge in ground balls.
Four different players scored for Monmouth and goalie Katie Donohoe made 11 saves in the cage.
Navy takes a 3-0 lead in the all-time series against the Hawks, who won the Northeast Conference title in 2012 and advanced to an NCAA Play-In Game.
The win was Navy's 15th-straight home victory at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, a new program record.
Navy will next host Richmond on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
