Lacrosse Magazine Rankings: Orange Crush to No. 1 Status

by Lacrosse Magazine Staff | LaxMagazine.com | Twitter

Lacrosse Magazine, the flagship publication of US Lacrosse, will publish weekly NCAA Division I women's rankings every Monday through championship weekend in May on LaxMagazine.com. Check back each week to see who is rising, falling and new to the list. The rankings are compiled by LM staff.

For the first time this season, there is a new No. 1 in the land, as Syracuse vaults into the top spot after defeating defending champion North Carolina on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. Johns Hopkins also runs far up the table after a win over Northwestern, settling just outside the Top 5.

Also Considered?

(In alphabetical order) Georgetown, James Madison, Navy, Princeton, Towson.

Who's Hot?

Johns Hopkins (+9): A big Sunday win over Northwestern marked the first time the Blue Jays have topped their ALC foes in Chicago, and improved the Blue Jays to 11-2 on the year with another test against Penn State this week.

Virginia (+4): With a win over Boston College and a tough showing against Maryland before the Terps ran away with things late, the Cavaliers showed they've got some life in them yet as tournament time approaches.

Ohio State (+3): A comeback against Penn State helped their movement, along with the drop of some other teams that were ahead of them.

Who's Not?

Albany (-11): Last week's loss to Syracuse ended their perfection but proved they could play top teams tough. This week, they plummet after sputtering with only four goals against Stony Brook. That, plus having no Top 20 wins to speak of make them the big drop this week, but they remain in the rankings with teams like Navy still waiting in the wings.

Northwestern (-3): A tough 2OT loss to Johns Hopkins has the Wildcats re-slotted to make room for the Blue Jays and an Ohio State team that also holds a win over them to move up.

Boston College (-3): The Eagles fall out of the Top 5 after dropping against Virginia - playing North Carolina, Syracuse and Maryland tough is great, but they stand at 3-4 in league play.

Who's New?

None: But, Princeton is becoming harder and harder to ignore, as the Tigers have won seven of their last eight, with the only loss coming by one goal against Maryland this week. In that stretch they also have a win over newly minted No. 15 Virginia.

Navy also continues to make its case, improving to 14-1 on the year this week. The looming regular season finale against Loyola this weekend should speak volumes about where Navy stands.

Dropped Out?

None
