Denver Women Announce 2014 Captains

from Press Release

DENVER – University of Denver women's lacrosse head coach Liza Kelly announced seniors Hannah Hook (Arnold, Md.), Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.), Annabelle Gilbride (Alexandria, Va.) and Meredith Harris (Middleburg, Va.) as team captains for the 2014 season.

"These seniors came into the program in a difficult year and worked through challenges to make them all better players and leaders," said Kelly. "They know what they want to achieve and they understand the hard work and the personal accountability that goes into those goals. They each have the ability to be game changers with their play and their words. I can't wait to see what they do this season."

Last season Hook started every game in goal for the Pioneers, leading the nation in save (190). Hook also ranked third-nationally in save percent (.514), ninth in saves-per-game (9.05) and 19th in goals-against average (8.89). A member of the IWLCA All-Regional Second Team in the West/Midwest, Hook recorded a career-best 14 saves against Oregon on April 26. Additionally, Hook was named to the All-MPSF First Team and All-MPSF Tournament Team.

In 2013 as an attacker, Etzel ranked 20th nationally in goals (52), 43rd in points (99) and 46th in goals-per-game (2.6) in 20 games played for DU. An Academic All-MPSF honoree, Etzel shot 77.8 percent on goal (77-of-99) and set a new career-high with seven points against High Point on March 4.

Midfielder Gilbride started all 21 games for the Pioneers in 2013 and shot 72.3 percent on goal (34-of-47). The Academic All-MPSF honoree recorded hat tricks against Fresno State (March 10), at Saint Mary's College (April 21) and against Southern California (May 2).

Harris started each game for DU as a midfielder last year, shooting 81.6 percent on goal (40-of-49). A member of the Academic All-MPSF Team, Harris recoded five goals against Louisville on March 2 and a hat trick against Winthrop six days later.

The Pioneers finished the 2013 season with an 18-3 record and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Denver went undefeated at home and had a perfect 8-0 record in the regular season against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams.

DU opens its 2014 schedule against Colorado at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m.
