VanderZalm Scores Seven in Vermont Victory

from press release

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Vermont sophomore Vanessa VanderZalm registered a career-high seven goals to lead Vermont to a 20-13 victory over Marist in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Vermont improves to 2-0 on the season while Marist falls to 1-1 overall.

VanderZalm's seven goals ties her for the second-most goals scored in a single game in program history. The 20 goals scored by Vermont were the most for the Catamounts since they tallied 22 in a win over Binghamton back in 2010.

Marcie Marino and Lucy Mower each picked up three goals, and Karli MacKendrick and Sydney Mas chipped in two scores apiece to help pace the Catamount offense. Mower's three scores were the first goals of her career, while Alex Bernier and Danielle Seifert chipped in a goal apiece for their first collegiate goals as well.

Marist opened the contest with the first two scores to jump out to an early lead. Vermont then rattled off seven of the next eight goals, including four from VanderZalm during the stretch, to push its lead to 7-3 at the midway mark of the first half.

Emily Leonard scored on a free-position shot for the Red Foxes to cut the lead to 7-4, but Vermont responded with the final three goals of the half to regain its large lead. Marino notched two of the final three scores, including one off a free position shot, as the Catamounts took a 10-4 advantage into halftime.

In the second half of play, Marist scored five of the first six goals to cut its deficit to 11-9 at the 22:14 mark. Kara McHugh and Allison Gionta combined for all five goals during the stretch, before Vermont answered back with scores from MacKendrick and VanderZalm.

Vermont held a 14-11 advantage with just over 12 minutes showing on the clock before the Catamounts added four consecutive goals to cushion their lead. Mower and Seifert combined for three goals during the run, as UVM pushed its lead to 18-11 at the 6:48 mark.

Marist added two goals following the Vermont run but wasn't able to mount a comeback, as Vermont picked up insurance goals from Mower and Bernier to close out the 20-13 victory.

Meg Hopkins started in goal for the Catamounts and made two saves to pick up her second straight victory. Freshman Mackenzie Maher saw her first career action in net, making six saves in 23 minutes. Abigail Witczak made four saves in the losing effort for Marist.
