Saint Joseph's Rolls Past Delaware State

PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore attack Emily Bowers dished out seven passes to break the single-game record in assists and junior midfielder Hannah Hutchins scored a career-high five goals as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team dominated Delaware State, 19-1, on Thursday afternoon at Sweeney Field.With the win, the Hawks improve to 2-2 overall and 2-0 at home.

Led by Hutchins' and Bowers' highlight performances, Saint Joseph's scored the first 19 goals of the game as nine different Hawks scored in the victory. Hutchins led the squad with five goals on six shots off the bench while junior midfielder Julia Falcone (3G), sophomore defender Kelly Phelan(3G) and sophomore attack Bianca Angstadt (3G) all added hat-tricks for the Hawks. Additionally, freshman attackNora McCallion added three assists and a tally while junior defender Molly Curcio and freshman midfielder Katelyn Ambrose each added their first collegiate goals.

Bowers' seven assists broke SJU's record for single-game assists, last held by two former Hawks and, most recently, by Lindsey-Kate McCool '08. Bowers assisted on four consecutive first-half goals and three additional tallies at the start of the second half to help the Hawks to the win.

On the defensive end, senior captain Brittany Hanrahan lit up the stat line with a career-high 10 ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (2-2) faced one shot on goal to tally one save in the first 35:39. Junior goalkeeper Nora McGeever saw the final 24:21 in net.

For the game, Saint Joseph's offense fired off a season-high 43 shots while SJU's defensive unit only allowed two shots for the whole game. The Hawks also held a 43-21 advantage in ground balls and caused the Hornets to turn the ball over 29 times while only turning the ball over a season-low 11 times. SJU also held a 13-9 edge in draw controls.

Kiyanna Brown scored for Delaware State (0-3) with 9:14 remaining in regulation.

Saint Joseph's will hit the road for its next three games, beginning with Manhattan next Saturday, March 8. Start time in Riverdale, N.Y. is slated for 1:00 p.m.
