WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Boston University women's lacrosse team held off an American comeback to earn a 12-11 road win over the Eagles in its first-ever Patriot League game on Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field.

Junior Jenna Boarman recorded a hat trick and freshman goalkeeper Caroline Meegan stopped a shot in the final second of regulation to help the Terriers improve to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play. With the loss, American moves to 2-5 on the year and 0-1 in Patriot League action.

Junior Becca Church, redshirt sophomore Mallory Collins and sophomore Jill Horka recorded two goals each while junior Lindsay Weiner added a pair of assists and a goal for the Terriers. Senior Sydney Godett and junior Kelsey Marafioti each scored once while freshman Taylor Hardison added a helper.

Meegan finished the game with six saves, including a key stop of a shot from Madison Hoon as time expired to seal the BU victory.

With the game tied 2-2 almost nine minutes in, the Terriers reeled off seven straight goals to take a 9-2 advantage with 6:23 remaining in the first half. Six different Terriers found the back of the net during the run, including a pair of tallies from Church.

American responded by scoring nine of the game’s next 10 goals, starting with a strike from Olivia Mangan with 4:28 to go in the first half and a tally from Terese Buechli sent the teams into the break with BU leading, 9-4.

The Eagles scored the first three goals of the second half before Horka got the Terriers back on the board with 22:12 on the clock to put the Terriers’ lead at 10-7. American followed with three unanswered goals to even the game at 10-10 with 14:52 remaining.

BU shook off the American run and used goals from Marafioti and Boarman to take a 12-10 lead. The Eagles got back within one, but the Terrier defense held on to secure the victory.

The Terriers finished the game with a 23-20 edge in shots and a 16-8 advantage in draw controls. Seniors Elizabeth Morse and Nell Burdis led BU with three draw controls each while Horka had a team-best two ground balls.

BU returns to action on Wednesday (March 12) when the Terriers visit Baltimore, Md., to face Johns Hopkins. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
