Four-Goal Spurt Lifts No. 5 West Chester
from press release
WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Host West Chester scored the first four goals of the second half to break a tie and open up a cushion it would not relinquish en route to a 13-9 PSAC women's lacrosse victory over visiting Slippery Rock on a sunny, but very windy Saturday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.
West Chester (4-1, 2-0 PSAC) fell behind late in the first half and needed a tally with four seconds left to go into the break knotted at 6-all. Slippery Rock (2-3, 0-3) put together a string of three consecutive markers over a five-minute span mdway through the first half that put The Rock up, 5-4.
Lauren Glassey tied it at five for the Golden Rams at the 8:32 mark. However, Casey Quinn (5 goals) put Slippery Rock back on top with 1:54 to play in the half. West Chester's Tori Dugan finished off a feed from Claire Grimwood just before the horn to send the game into halftime tied at six.
The difference was West Chester's adjustments defensively out of the locker room. The Golden Rams held The Rock scoreless over a 12:31 period that spanned both halves. West Chester went on a 5-0 run during that time to open up a 10-6 lead. Dugan and Hoover each tallied twice in that spurt.
Slippery Rock would score three more times the rest of the way. However, West Chester was able to answer each of those markers with a goal of their own to keep The Rock at bay.
Shannon Hayes led West Chester with five points on the strength of one goal and four assists. Grimwood finished with a hat trick and four points as well. Theresa Giunta, Devon Lotkowski and Glassey were the only others to tally outside of Dugan and Hoover's pair of goals.
Jess Henderson (1-0) made five saves in the second half to pick up her first win of the season in the cage for West Chester. MacKenzie O'Keefe started and made five saves in the first half. Slippery Rock's Kat Elkins made 12 saves for The Rock.
West Chester will host Bloomsburg on Monday at Vonnie Gros Field for a 4 p.m. tilt.
