No. 5 C.W. Post Women Thwart Queens (N.Y.)

FLUSHING, N.Y.
– The fifth-ranked C.W. Post women's lacrosse team held off Queens earlier today in conference play to come up with a 10-9 win behind three different players totaling four points.

With the win, the Pioneers improve to an overall record of 7-1 that also includes an improvement to 3-0 in conference action. The Knights go 5-2 on the season and fall to 0-2 in the conference thus far.

C.W. Post jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the course of the first 15 minutes of the game, started off by Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.) less than six minutes into the first half. Almost six minutes later, Mayott assisted on the second goal of the game as she found Abigail Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) to make the score 2-0. The third of the opening goals came off the stick of Samantha Losco (Smithtown, N.Y.), as the sophomore put the Pioneers up 3-0 nearly halfway through the first half.

With under 13 minutes to play in the opening half, Queens cut into the Pioneer lead with the team's first goal of the game as Sarah Boucher connected on a free position shot to make the score 3-1. C.W. Post grew the lead back to 5-1 over the final minutes of the first half behind goals from Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) and then Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.), with Mayott coming up with her second assist on Sileo's goal.

Going into the half, C.W. Post held a 5-2 lead as Boucher managed to assist on a goal by Heather Rosen with just 14 seconds left on the clock.

Opening the second half, the Pioneer increased the lead by two more goals between goals by Kathleen Rotan (West Islip, N.Y.) and Olen. Olen assisted on Rotan's goal before scoring her second of the game, with Sileo being credited with the assist on that.

Queens managed to bring the scoring to 8-5 before the Pioneers increased the margin to 10-5 with eight minutes left. Mayott and Losco were responsible for the goals, as the two each recorded their second goals of the game.

Over the final eight minutes of the game, the Knights scored four unanswered goals to make the deficit one goal at 10-9 with 1:51 remaining in the contest. The draw control following the Knights was goal was taken by Aimee Capps (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and allowed the Pioneers to control the clock down the stretch with the final score being that 10-9 score.

Sileo, Olen, and Mayott all totaled four points each to lead C.W. Post during the game. Sileo earned her points with three assists and a goal, Olen totaled three goals and an assist, while Mayott went with an equal two goals and two assists. As a team, the Pioneers used an 18-11 ground ball advantage to help secure position despite being defeated on draw controls by a 16-5 disadvantage.

Rosen led the way for Queens with five points on three goals and two assists and both Boucher and Kayleen Kelty totaled four points. Khali Evans made 12 saves in goals for the Knights.

Between the pipes for C.W. Post was Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.), who came up with the victory on 15 saves made as Queens came up with 34 shots.

Next on the schedule for the Pioneers will be a non-conference game against the 11th-ranked team in the nation, Merrimack, this Saturday in North Andover, Mass. The contest is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start on Merrimack's home field.
