No. 13 St. Anselm Notches Third Straight Victory

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Meghan Smith (Pittsford, N.Y.) and freshman Marissa Daly(Marshfield, Mass.) each registered six points to lead the 13th-ranked Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team to a 15-6 win against Saint Michael's College on Tuesday evening under the lights at Grappone Stadium.

The Hawks win their third straight to improve to 6-5 on the season, including 4-3 in Northeast-10 play, while the Purple Knights drop to 3-7, 1-6 NE-10.

Smith notched four goals, including her 50th of the season, and two assists, while Daly matched her career best with six goals.

Daly scored a pair of goals – the first assisted by freshman Sarah Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) 3:46 in and the second off a feed from Smith 42 seconds later – to stake the Hawks to a 2-0 lead.

Eliza Scoba scored the 95th goal of her career at the 22:46 mark to cut the Saint Michael's deficit in half, but junior Britini Hickman (Farmington, N.H.) found the back of the net off a Smith pass just 21 seconds later to make it 3-1.

Smith then scored her own goal off an individual effort to push the Saint Anselm lead to 4-1 just 1:07 later. Hickman followed by setting up Daly's third goal of the evening just 37 seconds later to make it a four-goal game.

Junior Carrie Brophy (Mansfield, Mass.) stretched the lead to 6-1 when she converted a free-position opportunity at the 16:27 mark. Smith buried her second of the game off a feed from Hickman with 9:18 to play in the opening half to give the Hawks a 7-1 lead.

Daly then ended the first half the way she opened it – with a pair of scores. She found the back of the net off a helper from junior Lauren Alfis (Hanover, Mass.) at the 7:02 mark and then closed the first-half scoring with an unassisted tally with 4:59 on the clock and the Hawks went into the locker room with a 9-1 advantage.

Hickman collected her third assist of the contest when she set up a Doherty goal just 1:35 into the second half to make it 10-1.

Saint Mike's then scored four straight goals in a span of just under 10 minutes to trim the Saint Anselm lead to 10-5 with 17:24 remaining.

The Hawks answered back with another Daly goal to snap the run and open their lead up to 11-6 with 15:21 on the clock. Smith then scored her 50th of the season on a free-position shot with 9:36 left before Alfis converted a free-position chance with 2:32 to go to make it 13-5.

Caitlin Mahoney scored a free-position goal for the Purple Knights with 1:16 remaining, but Smith's unassisted tally made it 14-6 before sophomoreTaylor Laro (Concord, N.H.) scored her first of the season on a free-position shot with 18 seconds left to close the scoring.

Sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Amato (Bedford, N.H.) made five saves for the Hawks, while Sandy Palumbo stopped 11 shots for the Purple Knights.

Saint Anselm outshot Saint Michael's, 33-14, including 19-3 in the opening half. The Hawks also held a 15-8 advantage in draw controls, including 8-3 in the first half. Saint Anselm converted four of its 10 free-position opportunities, while Saint Michael's was a perfect 2-for-2.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 14 at noon when they travel to take on top-ranked Le Moyne College. The next home game for the Hawks is Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. when they play host to Franklin Pierce University at Grappone.
