Limestone Overwhelming CC Poll Pick

from press release

HIGH POINT, N.C. – A 17-2 record, fifth straight league regular season and tournament championships and a fifth consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament appearance once again have Limestone women's lacrosse as the preseason favorite in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll as announced by the league on Friday, February 1. Voted on by the league's eight women's lacrosse head coaches, it is the seventh straight season that the Saints have been so honored.

The Saints earned 49 points and seven of the eight first place votes while Pfeiffer, nationally ranked a year ago, is second in the poll with 39 points and the other first place vote. Queens University of Charlotte, enters their final season in Conference Carolinas in third with 37 points and nearby rival Belmont Abbey is a close fourth with 35 points.

While the Saints will have to replace Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association First-Team All-American Racquel Prager, who rewrote the scoring section of the Limestone women's lacrosse record book, and goalkeeper and IWLCA Second-Team selection Brigid Milchling, the cupboard is anything but bare in either of those areas.

Two First-Team All-Americans from a year ago are easily ready to step up and fill the scoring role and run the offense in 2013. Junior attack Sarah Oor (Uxbridge, Canada) shattered the program's single season assist record with 56 (the previous mark was 41) and is now third all-time with 85 after just two seasons. No stranger to finding the back of the net herself, she also added 34 goals, good for fourth on the club, and finished with 90 points, just one shy of tying the program's single season mark.

The other offensive minded First-Team All-American back from a year ago is reigning Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year, sophomore attack Sam McCarrick (Oswego, N.Y.). In just her first year of collegiate lacrosse, McCarrick played in all 19 games, starting 18, and delivered the second-most goals on the team with 40, added 10 assists for 50 points and had 28 groundballs, 27 draw controls and nine caused turnovers.

On the defensive end, Limestone returns 2011 IWLCA First-Team All-American senior goalkeeper Rashelle McLellan (East Lyme, Conn.) and senior defender Skylar Marcoux (Woodbine, Md.), a 2012 IWLCA Second-Team All-American.

McLellan, after missing time due to injury a year ago, is set to regain her 2011 form in which she started all 20 games and posted a 7.28 goals against average (ranking fourth in the nation), .534 save percentage (second in the country) and led the Saints to the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship Game, finishing with an 18-2 record. That season she was also named a USACOLLEGELACROSSE.com and Synapse Sports Second-Team All-American and IWLCA All-Region First-Team selection.

Marcoux, meanwhile, anchored the defense a year ago as she led the team with 43 groundballs, was second in draw controls with 33 and tied for second with 13 caused turnovers. She was also one of just four players to start all 19 games on the season.

Also back to aid the offense is two-time IWLCA All-American (First in 2011, Second in 2010) is senior midfielder Chelsea Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.). With 117 career goals, defenses will certainly have to account for her presence on offense but Treat also makes an impact on the defensive side with 11 caused turnovers, 28 groundballs and 10 draw controls a year ago. She was an All-Conference Carolinas Second-Team selection a year ago, marking her third All-Conference honor with First-Team recognition in 2010 and 2011.

Limestone women's lacrosse opens its 17th season with a pair of night games beginning on February 12 at Catawba (6 p.m.) and February 15 at Conference Carolinas member Converse (7 p.m.). The Saints home opener will be on February 22 as they host Erskine (3:30 p.m.).
