No. 2 West Chester Routs Millersville by 10
from press release
West Chester, Pa. - The Millersville women's lacrosse team traveled to West Chester for its first PSAC road contest of the 2013 season. Brooke Fisher led the Marauders with a hat trick, but Millersville fell to the No. 2 ranked Golden Rams by a score of 18-8.
Goalkeeper Lauren Mateja recorded her fourth double-digit save total of the season tallying 11 saves in the loss. Millersville (4-2, 0-2 PSAC) could only muster a season-low 16 shots against a stingy Golden Ram defense. Fisher's three goals marked the third time this year that the junior had recorded at least hat trick and pushes her team lead in goal total to 21. Ashley Henderson, Becky Donkin, and Hannah Vogel (2) also scored in the loss.
West Chester (5-0, 2-0 PSAC) remained unbeaten on the year thanks to five goals from senior midfielder Jamie Dolan. Lauren Glassy (3) and Nicole Pyle (4) also notched hat tricks for the Golden Rams. Goalkeeper Jess Henderson had four saves in the victory.
For most of the first half, the Marauders nearly kept pace with the second-best team in the nation. Fisher's goal with 11minutes to play in the first period closed West Chester's lead to 6-4.
The Golden Rams used the final 10 minutes of the first half as an offensive flurry and increased their lead by eight. West Chester outscored Millersville 7-1 before halftime to take a 13-5 lead entering the break.
The teams traded goals to open the second half and then the Golden Rams turned up the defensive intensity. After Ashley Henderson scored with 28 minutes to play, the Marauders were unable to find the back of the net for the next 16 minutes. West Chester limited Millersville to just seven shots and two goals in the final 28 minutes of the game.
The Marauders defensive unit was nearly as impressive, holding the No. 2 Golden Rams to just five goals in the second half. The five goals in the second half tied for the least amount of goals that West Chester has scored in a period this season.
The eight goals scored by the Black and Gold were the most the team has scored against the Golden Rams since dropping 11 on West Chester in 2008.
Millersville continues to play on the road in the PSAC as they travel to Lock Haven on Tuesday, April 2 to take on the Bald Eagles. Game time is set as 4 p.m.
