York Women's Coach Becomes Triathlete
from press release
YORK, Pa. -- What can a former Division I conference Player-of-the-Year do once her playing days are over? Simple. Become a tri-athlete.
This is exactly what York College women's lacrosse head coach Jen Dragoni will do when she competes in her first triathlon this Sunday, September 13, in Washington D.C.
"I am very excited about it," Dragoni said referring to her initial triathlon. "It is something I just wanted to do and now I want to keep going."
Dragoni will compete in The Nation's Triathlon, an Olympic distance race consisting of a 1.5k swim, 40k bike ride, and 10k run. The trek will take the competitors by the National Mall, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial.
In order to prepare for her first triathlon, Dragoni signed on with Team in Training a sports-training charity program associated with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Team in Training provides athletes with certified coaches who help the athletes achieve their goals while giving them a platform to raise funds for the LLS.
"Team in Training has been so instrumental in getting ready for this triathlon," Dragoni said. "I signed up with the Baltimore chapter and we met two to three times per week to train which was great. The coach helped me to get physically ready for the competition as well as learning the intricacies of a triathlon. They are a great organization."
As part of signing on with Team in Training, Dragoni was required to raise $2,900 for the LLS, an amount she exceeded by $175. All of the $3,075 goes to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to advance the fight against blood cancers.
"I just want to thank all the donors who contributed to this cause," Dragoni commented. "In my training and this race I want to personally honor my grandfather and a family friend."
Beyond The Nation's Triathlon, Dragoni has lofty personal goals.
"I want to compete in an Iron Man," Dragoni said. "Of course a competition like that is a few years away for me, but it is definitely something I want to do."
Dragoni will officially begin her triathlon career on Sunday, opening with the 1.5k swim at 7:00 am.
