Shorewomen Improve to 3-0, Down Rowan

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Sophomore attacker Corinne Ziccardi (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) scored the game-winning goal 1:05 into the second overtime to give host Washington College a 10-9 double-overtime win over visiting Rowan in a non-conference women's lacrosse game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2004 season with the victory.
Rowan (1-1) struck first in the game as Ellen Brigham scored just 1:19 into the contest to give the Profs an early lead. The Shorewomen evened the score on a free-position goal by senior attacker Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) with 27:24 left in the half and took a 2-1 lead on a goal by junior attacker Kalli Parrish (Timonium, MD/McDonogh School) 55 seconds later. Neither team would score again until the 12:32 mark when junior midfielder/defender Ann Eickelberg (Amityville, NY/St. John the Baptist)scored a free-position goal to push the Shorewomen's lead to 3-1. Rowan evened the score by halftime on a pair of free-position goals as Michelle Lubrano scored at 7:32 and Trish Harrington followed at 4:02.
Ziccardi assisted on a goal by sophomore midfielder Marissa Restaino (Media, PA/Penncrest) 58 seconds into the second half to start a three-goal run for the Shorewomen. Parrish scored with 26:47 left and Ziccardi netted a free-position goal with 23:48 on the clock to give the Shorewomen a 6-3 lead. Rowan answered 31 seconds later as Vicky Sucharski scored and cut the lead to 6-5 on a goal by Lubrano off an assist from Caitlin Ravel with 17:34 remaining. Parrish netted her third goal of the afternoon on a free-position shot with 16:50 to go to give Washington a 7-5 lead.
The Profs then ran off four unanswered goals to build a 9-7 advantage. Sucharski found Harrington for a goal at 16:21, Lubrano scored on a free-position shot at 14:00 and netted her fourth goal of the day at 11:06, and Sucharski scored off an assist from Marissa Micciche with 10:54 remaining.
Ziccardi netted a free-position goal with 8:07 left in regulation to trim the deficit to 9-8 and Cannon found junior midfielder Rachel Bartee (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) for the game-tying goal with 1:25 left, evening the score at 9-9. Rowan had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation but a free-position shot by Ravel was tipped high by the stick of WC freshman midfielder/defender Kathleen Maleski with two seconds to go.
Rowan had another potential go-ahead free-position shot with 21 seconds left in the first overtime, but Micciche's attempt was stopped by WC sophomore goalie Stephanie Seibert (Clear Spring, MD/Mercersburg Academy [PA]). The Profs also had a shot by Lubrano go wide with one second left in the first overtime.
Washington freshman midfielder Chelsea Spector (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) controlled the draw to start the second overtime and the Shorewomen possessed the ball until Ziccardi cut from the right of the goal down the middle of the arc and fired in the game-winner.
Ziccardi finished with three goals and one assist for the Shorewomen, while Parrish scored three goals of her own and Cannon had a goal and an assist. Seibert made 10 saves between the pipes.
Lubrano led all players with four goals for the Profs. Sucharski had two goals and one assist and Harrington also finished with two goals. Lindsay Barriemade 17 saves in goal for Rowan.
The Shorewomen held a 39-25 advantage in shots and a 20-13 advantage in ground balls in the game. Rowan held a slim 12-11 margin in draw controls.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. game at Goucher.
