Hartwick Surges Past Marywood

ONEONTA, N.Y.
– Hartwick College scored the first six goals of the second half to break open a 7-7 tie on their way to a 17-11 win over Marywood University in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Friday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 2-0 on the season with the victory while the Pacers, who got three-goal performances from Kimberly Commisso and Taylor McKeown, see their record drop to 1-2.

Three different goal scorers gave Hartwick a 3-0 lead just under ten minutes into Friday's game before Diana D'Achille put Marywood on the board by converting a free-position opportunity with 23:38 left in the opening half. Brittany McCabe restored the Hawks' three-goal lead with an unassisted tally at the 20:55 mark.

Marywood scored three goals in a span of just 49 seconds to knot the game at 4-4. D'Achille brought the Pacers back to within two with her second goal of the game with 12:06 showing on the clock before Commisso scored a pair of unassisted goals 12 seconds apart to knot the score.

Allie Sodl gave Marywood their first lead of the contest by finding the twine with 9:56 to play in the opening stanza and Liz Fowler netted her first collegiate goal 19 seconds later to give the Pacers a 6-4 advantage. Brittany Lavaute and McCabe leveled the game at six-apiece with goals separated by just 15 seconds with just over five and half minutes to play in the opening 30 minutes of action.

Sarah Caughy's first collegiate goal, assisted by Fowler, at the 4:35 mark put Marywood back in front, but Hannah Kennedy equalized with 2:35 left and the score would remain tied at 7-7 at halftime with the Pacers holding a 20-14 edge in shots for the period.

Lavaute completed her hat-trick 7:45 into the second half to put Hartwick back on top and started a run of six unanswered goals that put the Hawks up 13-7 with 14:38 to play. McKeown halted the host's run with a free-position goal at the 12:56 mark. Meghan Luce briefly restored Hartwick's six-goal cushion before McKeown countered with her second goal of the game just 17 seconds later to make the score 14-9 in favor of the Hawks with 10:53 remaining.

After Hartwick stretched their lead to 15-9 on Lavaute's fourth goal of the game, Commisso completed her hat-trick with eight minutes to play to bring Marywood back within five. McKeown scored her third goal of the game 59 seconds later, but McCabe's fifth goal of the game gave the Hawks a 16-11 lead with 5:03 to play and Erica Scicchitano closed out the scoring with a free-position tally with 1:58 to play.

Hartwick held a slim, 35-32 edge in shots for the game while both teams were credited with 18 groundballs. Marywood held a 13-8 advantage in draw controls for the game and was a solid, 15-18 in clear attempts.

Jen Kaye made 13 saves to pick up the win for the Hawks while Megan Planz went the distance in the Pacers' cage making nine stops on the afternoon.

Marywood returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Wilkes-Barre to take on King's College in a game scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
