No. 7 F&M Needs Comeback to Top Ursinus

from press release

LANCASTER, Pa. – Cat Serpe and Lauren Selawski each registered four points to rally #7 Franklin & Marshall to an 11-9 Centennial Conference (CC) win at Tylus Field on Wednesday. The Bears (6-5, 4-1 CC) led after 30 minutes, but the Diplomats (11-1, 5-0 CC) outscored Ursinus 8-4 in the second half, netting three of the last four to seal the victory.

Lauren Ehrhardt gave F&M the lead for good with 9:29 to play. The junior slipped open on the right side of the goal circle and slam dunked a Serpe feed from behind to make it 9-8 in favor of the Diplomats. A little over four minutes later, Serpe sprinted out from behind the cage, looped around a defender and gave F&M its first multiple goal lead of the game, 10-8. Serpe's marker was her third of the afternoon. Her first, fed by Selawski, gave the Diplomats a 2-1 lead early on.

The Bears' Alison Furman, who had both of Ursinus' assists on the day, scored her second goal with a run down the left hand side to make it a 10-9 game with 3:49 to play. Selawski, who had three helpers for the Diplomats, took Furman's cue and got in on the scoring as well. Caroline Krohn inserted a perfect feed from up high on the right side for Selawski to seal the game.

Ursinus did everything it wanted in the game except win. The Bears owned the slow tempo throughout the contest and the controlled the scoreboard in the first half. Ursinus used deliberate possessions and solid goalkeeping from first-year Riley Pembroke to ride a 5-3 lead into the half. She recorded four of her six saves on the day in the first half. Most of her stops came with the Diplomats' top scorers right on her doorstep. In the meantime, four different players accounted for Ursinus' first half scoring that featured a four-goal run to overcome a 2-1 deficit.

Lindsey Urban sparked the Bears' salvo appearing as a cutter on top of the goal circle for Furman. Urban dropped the ball against the grain inside of the left post to make it 2-2. She closed the run with a free position laser that rose up under the crossbar.

F&M changed the momentum with Ehrhardt's first of the day with 5.6 seconds showing in the first half. She took a Selawski feed from the left side, evaded a defender and got the Diplomats on track. Serpe netted the first goal of the second half with an individual effort to make it 5-4. Emily Diehl fired a turnaround blast off of F&M's Kelsey Hoffman and into the net to extend it to 6-4 Ursinus.

F&M netted four of the next five with Erin Dunne accounting for three of them. She was the beneficiary of one of Ursinus' five broken clears, giving her a breakaway goal to get the Diplomats within one. Selawski gave Katie Delaney a feed from behind the net to knot it at 6-6. The Diplomats never trailed again the rest of the way. Dunne scored the next one on an over the top feed from Ehrhardt, before Ursinus' Alyssa Thren scored the middle goal of her own hat trick. Thren ran through the fan, only to see Dunne do the same thing at the other end moments later. Thren then knotted it at 8-8 on an FPS goal before Ehrhardt put F&M out in front for good.

The Diplomats dominated the draw circle 16-6 with Krohn and Libby Nichols winning four apiece. Krohn's four came during F&M's run to the lead, while the bulk of Nichols wins came down the stretch. Nichols last win on the circle set up F&M's stall to the final horn for the win.

The Diplomats return to action on Saturday at Swarthmore.
