William Smith No Match for No. 5 Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y.
– Five different players scored two or more goals as the nationally fifth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated William Smith, 17-7, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at the Stadium Complex.

Sophomore Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) led the Red Dragons (9-1) with four goals and seven ground balls. She also added two assists. Junior Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) scored a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists, and junior Jordan Miller (Liverpool) also notched three goals. Freshman Ashley Cook (Commack) recorded two goals and two assists, while junior Erin Kollar (East Islip) had two goals and one assist.

Sophomore Mary Hartzheim (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) contributed one goal and two assists, sophomore Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) had one goal and one assist and sophomore Taylor Harney (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford) tallied a goal for Cortland. Sophomore goalie Ally Levy (Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) made nine saves to run her record to 7-0 on the season.

Junior Lucy Johnson (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) paced the Herons' (4-4) offense with two goals. Senior Cassie Findlay (Riverside, CT/Episcopal) and junior Katherine Vesce (Cold Spring Harbor) chipped in with one goal and one assist each, and sophomores Marissa Potter (Concord, MA/Concord Carlisle), Kathleen Ragan (Topsfield, MA/Masconomet) and Emily Leahy (Madison, NJ/Morristown-Beard) recorded one goal apiece. Sophomore goalie Jesse Wilson (Rutland, VT) made four saves in 39 minutes, 49 seconds before giving way to freshman Maggie McNair (Wilmette, IL/Loyola Academy), who stopped two shots over the final 20:11.

Cortland never trailed in the game as it opened up a 2-0 lead on goals from Abbott at 28:02 and Di Fato at 27:20. After Potter made it 2-1 at 20:54, the Red Dragons ran off four goals in a row from four different players to grab a 6-1 lead at the 11:49 mark. Findlay and Di Fato traded goals in the closing minutes and Cortland led, 7-2, at the half.

Johnson sandwiched a pair of goals around Kollar's second of the game and William Smith pulled to within 8-4 early in the second half. Cook and Miller answered with scores less than 90 seconds apart before Vesce scored at 22:49 to make it a 10-5 game. Cortland took control of the contest by scoring the next six goals, two each from Di Fato and Miller, to gain a 16-5 advantage with 6:08 left in the game. Leahy broke the streak with a goal for the Herons at 3:52, and Harney and Ragan closed out the scoring with free-position goals at 1:27 and :24, respectively.
