Bowdoin Tops Williams in Top 20 Battle
from press release
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Katie Stewart scored five
goals as the Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team cruised to a
12-5 win over Williams on Saturday at a rainy and cold Ryan Field.
The Polar Bears (11-2, 6-2 NESCAC), ranked 12th nationally, reach
11 wins for the first time since 2006 while the 18th-ranked Ephs
(8-7, 3-5 NESCAC) lose their second straight outing.
Stewart finished with five goals to lead all scorers while Liz Clegg, McKenna Teague and Jordan Smith had two scores apiece. Clegg also collected six ground balls as Bowdoin committed a season-low nine turnovers in the game. Kaitlin Ellis and Becca McGovern had two scores each to pace Williams.
Williams led 2-1 after a McGovern score 7:01 into the contest. Bowdoin took over from there, using a 5-0 run, sparked by a pair of Teague goals, to take a 6-2 advantage that they would never relinquish. Ellis cut the lead to 6-3 with a score with 8:31 left in the opening period, but the Polar Bears responded by holding the Ephs without a goal for the next 31:52. Bowdoin scored four times during that span, including three from Stewart, to push the lead to 10-3 with under seven minutes to play.
Tara Connolly stopped six shots and allowed just five goals for Bowdoin, who collected 11 caused turnovers as a team. Williams committed 23 turnovers as a team and were out-shot by Bowdoin 37-16 for the contest. Julia Schreiber did her best to keep Williams in contention, stopping 19 shots on the afternoon.
Bowdoin will return to action Wednesday evening at home against Husson while the Ephs will play their regular season finale on Friday against Middlebury.
