Albright Women Win First-Ever Game
from press release
LANCASTER, Pa. - The Albright College women's lacrosse team had a great start to its first-ever varsity contest- scoring the third-fastest goal in Divison III history as the Lions defeated Lancaster Bible, 16-7 on Monday.
Junior Kim Harkins had 10 goals and 12 points (just four short of the all-time NCAA records). She was also six seconds away from the record for fastest goal to start a game, tying for third all-time in that category.
Freshman Meghan Wilson had a hat trick; also scoring for Albright was Nicole Rohrbach, Gabrielle Ceballos and Kelsea Guckin with one tally each.
The Lions may have been playing together for the first time ever but didn't look it as Albright limited turnovers and controlled a majority of the game's draws. Freshman goalie Arlena Diep did her part, making 10 saves.
Albright had a dream start to its inaugural contest, going up 3-0 in the first six minutes. Harkins scored right off the season's opening draw, and the Lions had their first lead just 12 seconds into their history.
That goal tied Eastern Connecticut State (2002) and Buffalo State (2009) for third fastest ever to start a Division III game, trailing only that same 2009 Buffalo State team- who went up 1-0 on SUNY-Geneseo after just eight seconds, and Fredonia State, who recorded a goal six seconds into a 2010 matchup with Becker.
Wilson scored less than three minutes in and Harkins added her second, 5:53 into the contest to put Albright up 3-0.
LBC showed some fight, as Whitney Heise scored twice in a 66-second span and Akasha Kapp finished off a free position attempt to tie the game.
Harkins answered with two more, and then scored her fifth of the game to make it 7-4 Albright after Heise and Guckin had traded free position goals.
The Lancers' Rebekah Weidel tallied five minutes before halftime to keep her team within two at the break, but Albright would go on to dominate the second half with a 9-2 run.
The Lions started strong in the second period as well, as Wilson and Rohrbach scored in the first 1:09 to make it 9-5. Albright later recorded the final six goals of the game, including three straight Harkins goals to close out a memorable first game for the Red and White.
Heise had a hat trick and added an assist, while Weidel scored twice for Lancaster Bible.
Albright (1-0) travels to Hood on Wednesday, before its home opener on Saturday vs. Immaculata. LBC is 0-1 on the year.
