Tufts Pulls Away from Conn. College in Second Half

from press release

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Tufts University women's lacrosse team scored four goals in the opening 7:38 of the second half to pull away for a 12-7 victory at Connecticut College Tuesday.

Senior attack Lara Kozin (Suffern, NY) scored two goals and assisted on three others to lead the 11th ranked Jumbos. Kelly Hyland (Acton, MA) chipped in with three goals and one assist for the visitors. Casey Egan (Massapequa, NY) and Gabby Horner (Allentown, NJ) both scored twice for Tufts. Junior net-minder Tess Shapanka (Sudbury, MA) stopped six shots en route to the win.

Connecticut College junior Bri Miller (Sudbury, MA) netted four scores to lead the hosts. Lowell Abbott (Manchester, MA) scored twice for the Camels. Senior Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, MA) collected six draws and added four caused turnovers, three ground balls and a goal in the Camel setback. Junior Kelsey Burke (Kingston, NH) made five saves in the loss.

Miller netted her second goal of the opening half with 5:00 minutes remaining to even the score at three. But the Jumbos took a 4-3 lead into the break after Meg Boland (New Canaan, CT) scored with 3:56 remaining in the first stanza.

Tufts extended their lead with two quick scoring strikes coming 29 seconds apart. Kozin assisted Kerry Eaton (Norfolk, MA) for the first goal and then connected with Egan with a nifty-looking feed from behind the cage.

The Jumbos closed out their run when Hyland scored on a pass from Cohen to make it a 8-3 game with 22:28 remaining in the contest.

Miller added two more goals in the second half, but it was not enough and the Jumbos were able to record the 12-7 win.

Tufts will visit Babson for a 5:00 pm non-conference game Friday. The Camels will host Middlebury College Saturday for a 12:00 pm NESCAC game in New London.
