No. 11 Amherst Tops Buffalo State for Third Straight Win

CLAREMONT, Fla. – The 11th-ranked Amherst
College women’s lacrosse team bumped its win streak to three
games by defeating Buffalo State College at the National Training
Center on Tuesday, 16-9.
Sophomores Elizabeth Ludlow, Alex Philie and Krista Zsitvay combined for 10 of Amherst’s goals, with Ludlow accounting for four and her classmates recording three apiece. Philie added an assist and a team-best six draw controls, while Ludlow had an assist of her own.
Ludlow and Philie scored the first two goals of the game, but Buffalo State came back to tie things up at 2-2. Marta Randall ’13, Philie and Ludlow pushed right back and gave the Lord Jeffs a 5-2 advantage, allowing them to carry an 8-5 lead into halftime.
First-year Meghan Mills and Zsitvay each scored to make it a 10-5 game after the opening 10 minutes of the second half, and Amherst never let Buffalo State get within striking distance. Mills finished with two goals for the Jeffs, with Hillary Densen ’13 dishing out three assists.
Amherst held the edge in shots (26-22), ground balls (14-9) and draw controls (15-11), committing only nine turnovers while forcing 12. Lamia Harik ’12 made a pair of saves for the Jeffs, who were a perfect 5-for-5 on clear attempts.
The Lord Jeffs will remain in Claremont to take on William Smith College (1-1) this Thursday at 4 p.m.
