New Program Defiance College Hires Allen as First Coach

from press release

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College athletics department has announced that it has hired Jason Allen as the head coach of the new women's lacrosse program. The team will begin in 2012-2013, with a full varsity schedule planned for 2013-2014.

"We are happy with the addition of Coach Allen and the women's lacrosse program to our athletics department," said Defiance College Athletics Director Jenni Morrison. "Jason has a lot of local ties and we are excited to see where he can take this program."

The DC women's lacrosse program will compete as a club program throughout the 2012-2013 year, before becoming the 22nd NCAA Division III sponsored sport offered at Defiance College for the 2013-2014 campaign.

The addition of women's lacrosse is the latest for a rapidly growing athletics program at Defiance College and comes on the heels of the Yellow Jackets adding a men's lacrosse program, which is set to compete as a varsity program in the spring of 2013. DC is also in the midst of its first men's and women's swimming and diving season.

"Defiance College has added four new teams in the last 18 months and will open the brand new George M. Smart Athletic Center in January," stated Morrison. "We are continuing to provide our current and future student-athletes with outstanding new opportunities to excel."

Allen comes to Defiance College after one year as an assistant with the women's lacrosse team at NCAA Division II Tiffin University and five seasons as the head coach at Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, Ohio.

"I am excited to start my career as the head coach here at Defiance College," stated Allen. "To build a program from scratch has always been something that I have wanted to do and there is no better place than right here in Defiance, centrally located between Toledo, Cleveland and Columbus, which are three of Ohio's four biggest lacrosse cities."

Allen has coached women's lacrosse for seven years and also has over a decade of experience coaching soccer at the high school level. Allen will look to use those ties throughout the deep regional recruiting base during his time at DC, after more than doubling his squad size in his stint at Notre Dame Academy.

Allen is United States Lacrosse Level 1 certified and earned a bachelor's degree in education from Tennessee Technological University in 2003.

"The staff and faculty here at Defiance College have accepted me with open arms and have helped me transition smoothly into my new position," Allen added. "I could not ask for more."

Defiance College is currently set to compete as a member of the 14-team Midwest Lacrosse Conference, starting in the spring of 2014.
