WHO HE IS: Jesse Wood plays attack for Seton Catholic Central High in New York. He just finished his junior year and has been on the varsity all three seasons -- being the leading scorer twice. The 6-foot, 165-pound Wood also will be on the varsity football team in the fall as a tailback, but is watching for injuries. Several colleges have become interested in his lacrosse services since he has posted some big numbers.
WHAT HE DID: Wood carried Seton Catholic to a victory in the Section 4 Class C title game. He got five goals and four assists in his team's 11-9 win over Chenango Valley, taking care of most of Seton Catholic's offense. The Saints jumped out to a 9-2 first-half lead, but Chenango Valley made it interesting in the fourth quarter. Wood got seven of his points en route to that big early lead. The two teams split a pair of 12-11 decisions during the regular season, but the Saints won the big one.
WHY WE NOTICED: Wood has been a scoring machine throughout his days at Seton Catholic. He's the school's all-time leading scorer despite having one more year left. He finished with 75 goals and 46 assists for 121 points this season, leading SCC to the school's initial appearance in the state playoffs. Wood also paced New York State Section 4 in scoring for the second straight season. In 2008, Wood finished with 58 goals and 44 assists.
WHAT HE SAID: "We were working really hard in the offseason. This was our main goal, to get to the finals. Our goal was to take the section crown. We only have about 400 kids in our school, and we only started our program about five years ago, so I think we really surprised some people. We've been working so hard. We knew we had the talent this year. I thought this would be a year that we could do it."
WHAT'S NEXT: Seton Catholic's season is finished. The Saints ended with a 17-4 record.
