Casey Powell is the new director of lacrosse at North Broward (Fla.) Preparatory School and will serve as its boys' varsity head coach, the school has announced. Powell has already assembled a noteworthy coaching staff that will seek to build the program into an area lacrosse power.

Powell resigned as lacrosse director at St. Andrew's (Fla.) in May after two and a half years leading the boys' and girls' programs there. He will have the same role at North Broward Prep, a pre-kindergarten-through-12th grade school in Southern Florida.

Powell's staff will include New York Hall of Fame coach Kirk Ventiquattro, who coached Powell in high school at Carthage (N.Y.), Mario Ventiquattro, Kirk's son and a former MLL and Ohio State attackman, and Chesapeake Bayhawks coach Dave Cottle, who will be a program consultant for North Broward this season.

Last year, North Broward's boys' team went 3-9, falling in a district semifinal playoff game to West Boca Raton (Fla.).

"I'm very excited to take the reins of the NBP lacrosse program," Powell said in a press release. "The boarding school is conveniently located in beautiful Coconut Creek, Fla., and is breaking ground on a brand new lighted turf stadium. My goal is to change the culture immediately and bring in the world's finest lacrosse coaches and players to interact and support our program.

"It is my intention to attract the top players in the state of Florida and across North America who share the school's vision of excellence in study and lacrosse. We have a lot of work to do, but I'm excited to begin."

Powell will offer programs in the South Florida area and has scheduled several prominent players to visit NBP, including his brother, Ryan, 2013 Tewaaraton Award winner and MLL Rookie of the Year Rob Pannell, two-time MLL and NLL MVP John Grant, Jr., Denver Outlaws faceoff man Anthony Kelly, six-time MLL Defensive Player of the Year Brodie Merrill, 2006 U.S. men's national team captain Pat McCabe and 2013 MLL Goaltender of the Year Jesse Schwartzman, Hamilton Nationals goalie Brett Queener and 2013 first-team All-American, Tewaaraton and ESPY finalist, former North Carolina midfielder Kara Cannizzaro.

"We are very excited to have Casey join the North Broward Prep Family," NBP athletic director Scott Williams said. "His history and background in the sport of lacrosse is widely known, but I was most impressed by Casey's character and vision. I am confident that he will do great things here and will take our lacrosse programs to the next level."

Powell, 37, returned to the professional game this summer and will play this weekend for the Bayhawks at MLL Championship Weekend at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. The two-time Team USA member will also be among 94 players trying out for the 2014 U.S. men's national team over Labor Day weekend.
