| Former junior college lacrosse star Kent Squire Hill was convicted in the murder of Tashina General, his ex-girlfriend, and will be sentenced in January. |
Kent Squire Hill, a Six Nations lacrosse star and former NJCAA Midfielder of the Year at Onondaga Community College, was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder in the death of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Tashina General.
Hill, 23, was arrested in April 2008. He will be sentenced Jan. 22 in Brantford, Ontario.
According to the Hamilton Spectator,
Hill testified he had sex several times with General even though he
was in a long-term relationship with someone else. Hill was
reportedly upset when General told him she was pregnant and that
she believed the baby was his. He picked up General at her home
Jan. 22, 2008, and she was never seen again.
Three months later, her body was found buried in a shallow grave
in the bush behind Hill’s family home. Hill, also known as
Kent Owen Hill, told the court that General slipped down some
stairs and was angry with him. He testified he put his hands to her
throat after she knocked his glasses off.
Like many Native Americans from the Six Nations reservation, Hill had a skill set cultivated in the tight confines of box lacrosse. After he helped lead the Six Nations junior team to just its second Minto Cup, he transferred his skills to the field game. At Onondaga Community College, outside of Syracuse, N.Y., he starred alongside current Syracuse star Jeremy Thompson and No. 1 National Lacrosse League draft pick Cody Jamieson, leading the Lazers to junior college championships in both 2006 and in 2007. He was also named 2007 NJCAA Midfielder of the Year and committed to play for the Orange for the 2009 season before his arrest in 2008.
