TORONTO - Toronto Nationals Lacrosse have named Dave Huntley as head coach for their inaugural season beginning this May.  The official launch of the Toronto franchise was made on February 20 during a press conference when the team name and logo were introduced.

"I was very surprised and flattered when Stuart (Brown) asked me to be the coach of Toronto Nationals Lacrosse team" said Huntley.  "When he told me about the ownership group and their vision for the team, I felt it was something that I needed to be a part of" he added.

Huntley has been involved with the National Lacrosse League since its inception as The Eagle League in 1987.  He was the first General Manager in Philadelphia Wings history and has worked in various roles for the Baltimore Thunder, Pittsburgh Crossfire, Washington Power and Colorado Mammoth.  He is currently in his second year as head coach for the Philadelphia Wings.

Stuart Brown, President and GM of Toronto Nationals Lacrosse said Huntley was an ideal fit for the Toronto team and first choice for head coach.

"Dave has both played and coached with our National Program and brings wealth of professional and international experience" said Brown.  "I would describe him as a true player's coach, someone who engages his players and has great communication skills."

"Our roster includes a number of guys that I was very fortunate to coach in the 2006 World Championships" Huntley said.  "Guys like Brodie (Merrill), (John Grant) Junior, Gavin (Prout), Colin (Doyle), Jeff (Zywicki) and Jordan (Hall) are great players but they are even better teammates.  It will be great re-connecting with them this summer."

Huntley, a four-time coach for Team Canada, won the gold medal at the 2006 World Field Championships most recently an assistant coach for the squad that year.  He has also served as an assistant coach for the Baltimore Bayhawks of MLL from 2003-2005 and helped guide the team to a championship season in 2005.

"Dave has had success at every level," said Brown.  "He has the respect of his peers and most importantly the respect of the players.  With him at the helm, we feel that we have the cornerstone of our franchise in place and we will look to surround Dave with young and knowledgeable coaching staff who can relate closely to our players and the fast pace of the MLL" Brown added.

Huntley, born and raised in the Greater Toronto Area, left Canada as a young man after being recruited to play lacrosse for the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays.  He currently lives in Baltimore, MD with his family and is excited to get home this summer and coach in the city of Toronto.

"I spent a great deal of my childhood playing at the CNE.  Coaching at BMO Field is going to bring back a lot of great memories for me" Huntley added.

The Toronto Nationals begin their 12 game season on May 15, 2009 at Navy-Marine-Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD versus the Washington Bayhawks and host the Chicago Machine for their home opener on Saturday May 22 at BMO Field.
