Outlaws Sweep Struggling
from press release
DENVER -- Sweeping the season series against the Long Island Lizards (5-6) tonight, the Denver Outlaws (9-2) defeated their host opponent 13-9 at Mitchel Field in New York. Attackman Brendan Mundorf (UMBC) led the Outlaws in scoring with three goals and an assist for four total points. Midfielder Brian Langtry (Hofstra), attackman Drew Westervelt (UMBC) and attackman Dan Hardy (Syracuse) each scored two goals to compliment Denver's scoring threat. Goalie Jesse Schwartzman (Johns Hopkins) performed well in net, making 16 saves to help maintain a four-goal scoring advantage in the second half.
The Outlaws came out of the gates firing tonight, scoring four of the first six goals to take a 4-2 lead going into the quarter break. Westervelt first found the back of the net at the 7:18 mark of the quarter. Mundorf and later Langtry rounded out the first 15 minutes with goals at 11:02 (Mundorf), 11:43 (Langtry) and 12:24 (Mundorf).
The Lizards bounced back in the second quarter and opened up the scorebooks with the first three goals of the quarter. Westervelt and Hardy put a halt to the rally with goals at 10:42 and 12:53, respectively. Long Island managed to tie up the game with under a minute and a half left in the second though, with attackman Tim Goettelmann (Loyola College) scoring an unassisted goal at 13:42.
Tonight the game would be settled in the third stanza though. Denver pulled ahead with a two-point goal from Langtry almost five minutes into the quarter (4:46). The Lizards scored one of their final three goals just over two minutes later but the Outlaws had already captured momentum and never looked back. Midfielder Jeff Sonke (North Carolina) blasted in the next goal at 8:24, followed by Hardy who tallied his second two minutes later (10:35). Then at the 10:56 mark midfielder Max Seibald (Cornell) scored the unassisted, game winning goal.
Through the fourth both teams traded goals, with defenseman Matt Bocklet (Johns Hopkins) scoring his third goal of the season at 5:32 and Mundorf completing his hat trick at 13:50.
The Outlaws will complete their regular season run next Saturday when the team travels to BMO Field in Toronto to play the Nationals (6-5).
