MLL Notebook: Bayhawks Can Back into Playoffs

from press release

The 2009 MLL regular season will come to a conclusion following this weekend's games. The last playoff spot is still open to either Long Island or Washington. Denver clinched the No. 1 seed, while Boston can clinch the No. 2 seed if it can beat Chicago. There will be an off week prior to the 2009 New Balance MLL Championship Weekend on Aug. 22-23.

The Bayhawks and Cannons face off Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Boston, providing a chance for the Bayhawks to slide into the playoffs for 2009. There is more than just playoff significance, however, as the Cannons and Bayhawks have both won 61 regular season games all time, which is the most in the MLL, meaning the team that comes out victorious will be the league's leader in wins.

Sweepin' Up

The Denver Outlaws, first in the league and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, will go for a season sweep against the Toronto Nationals on Saturday. Denver has swept Washington and Long Island already, and, if they can beat Toronto again, the Outlaws will become the first team to have swept three teams in a single season since the 2007 Philadelphia Barrage swept Washington, New Jersey, and Boston.

Road Sweet Road?

The Outlaws are also poised to capture a perfect record on the road with a win in Toronto on Saturday. With an impressive 5-0 record away from INVESCO Field this year, Denver is the only team currently with a perfect road record heading into their game versus the Nationals at BMO Field.

Long Island Seasoning

Lizards midfielder Blake Miller played in his 99th regular season game last weekend against Denver. Following this week's game against Chicago, Miller will become the third Lizard to play 100 regular season games. Teammates Tim Goettelmann and Brian Dougherty are at 109 and 104, respectively.

K-Lev At It Again

Chicago attackman Kevin Leveille scored his 200th goal in last weekend's game against Washington. Even though the Machine lost, Leveille scored five goals and added an assist. Scoring the final goal of the fourth quarter, it was Leveille's score which sent the game into overtime.

Pistol Peet

In his debut with the Washington Bayhawks, rookie Peet Poillon scorched the Chicago defense for four goals. From this exceptional performance, Poillon was awarded this week's Rookie of the Week honor.

No Cinderella Story in Chicago

Thanks to Ben Hunt's and Peet Poillon's combined nine goals, the Washington Bayhawks shocked the Machine in overtime. Cutting Chicago's Cinderella story short, the Bayhawks were on the brink of elimination, but thanks to their rookies, Washington now has a shot at the playoffs. If they can beat Boston, along with a Long Island loss to Chicago, the Bayhawks can create a Cinderella story of their own.

The Today Show

The Long Island Lizards made an appearance on The Today Show on Tuesday. Nicky Polanco was front and center giving lessons to Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry, and Al Roker, which culminated in shooting contest which was won by the ladies.
