Lizards Pull Away From Denver to Win Fifth Straight

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Making his Major League Lacrosse debut, midfielder Will Mangan scored two goals and added three assists to lead the Long Island Lizards (5-2) to their fifth straight win, a 14-8 MLL victory over the Denver Outlaws (5-3) at James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday night.
After opening the season with back-to-back losses, the Lizards have rebounded to win their last five games and move into second place in the MLL standings.
The Lizards took a quick 2-0 lead in the first two minutes on goals by Mangan and attackman Max Seibald before the Outlaws answered by scoring four of the next five goals for a 4-3 edge with 2:28 remaining in the first quarter.
A pair of goals by attackman Grant Catalino regained a one-goal lead for the Lizards before Denver countered by scoring four of the next five goals, giving the Outlaws an 8-6 lead with 2:16 remaining in third quarter.
But, the Lizards secured the victory by scoring eight straight goals over the final 16 minutes, including a pair of goals from Seibald.
While Mangan earned Bud Light MLL Player of the Game honors with his five-point performance, Seibald and rookie attackman Matt Gibson each added three goals with an assist. Goalkeeper Drew Adams made 14 saves for the Lizards, who outshot Denver by a 40-38 margin.
Midfielder Jordan McBride led Denver with three goals while attackman Jeremy Sieverts and midfielder Peet Poillon each contributed two goals with an assist.
