Major League Lacrosse's playoffs will have a new look next year.

The league announced Friday that the 2014 semifinals will be played at the home of the two higher seeds the weekend of Aug. 16, with the championship game to be played Aug. 23 at a location to be determined.

This is a departure from the past format, which saw the league's semifinals and finals played over one weekend at a neutral site, or at one of the league's home venues.

"We have decided to change the format next year to reward the fans and the teams with the better record and allow them to host a playoff game in front of their home crowds," MLL commissioner David Gross said in a statement. "This will ensure that the top two teams in the league have a true home field advantage."

This year's MLL championship weekend, at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., just outside Philadelphia drew an announced crowd of 4,028 for a pair of Saturday semifinals and 3,792 for Sunday's championship game between the Chesapeake Bayhawks and Charlotte Hounds.

The 2014 MLL season will begin with the collegiate draft being held in Philadelphia on Jan. 10, at the US Lacrosse National Convention, presented by Champion.

The regular season will begin the weekend of April 26 — same as in 2013 — and end the weekend of Aug. 9.

The MLL said it will also announce the site and format for the 2014 All-Star Game in the coming weeks.
