New York Opens by Outgunning Rochester
from Press Release
The Lizards opened up the 2014 season at home against the Rochester Rattlers at Shuart Stadium, looking to snap a four game losing streak to the Rochester and avenge a disappointing 2013 season.
Rochester was the first to score with Dan Hardy finding the back of the cage on a pass from Kevin Leveille. The Lizards answered back with Greg Gurenlian scoring off a face-off, followed by goals from Rob Pannell and Max Seibald. Dave Lawson was next to score for the Rattlers, before Mike Manley scored on a pass from Dan Hardy to tie the game at 3 with just under 7 minutes left in the first quarter. The quick back and forth scoring continued throughout the quarter, with Manley, Boyle and Turri adding points for Rochester, and JoJo Marasco and Albert Maione scoring their first goals of the season for the LIzards. At the close of the first quarter, the Rattlers lead New York 7-6.
After a slower second quarter, scoring picked back up in the third and fourth quarters, and the Lizards began to run away with the lead at the start of the second half. Despite the Lizards dominating the second half, Dan Hardy and Justin Turri tried their best to keep the Rattlers in the game with five (4g, 1a) and six (3g, 1 2-ptg, 1a) points each, respectively. But Turri and Hardy's 11 points weren't enough to stop the Lizards, who finished the game with a 17-15 victory.
The Lizards saw seven different players find the back of the cage in the 17-15 victory, with Rob Pannell scoring six goals, five of which were unassisted. Max Seibald and Albert Maione led the scoring effort behind Pannell, scoring three goals each, with Matt Striebel, who scored a goal and added two assists in his debut as a Lizard. Pannell, the 2013 Cascade Rookie of the Year, was named the Player of the Game for his impressive performance in the season opener.
The Lizards travel to Chesapeake to take on the defending MLL Champion Bayhawks next Saturday at 7 PM, and return to Shuart Stadium on Friday, May 30 against the Boston Cannons.
