Coming out of the gates quick, the Florida Launch built an early lead and never looked back en route to an 11-8 win over the New York Lizards Saturday night.
Casey Powell got the Launch on the board first after finishing off an unassisted goal past Lizards goalie Drew Adams. Powell finished the game with two goals and two assists to take back the MLL lead in points with 29 after Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil passed him up in yesterday's 17-16 win over the Ohio Machine.
Jordan Hall, who registered his first three goals of the season in last weeks loss to the Rochester Rattlers, gave the Launch a two-goal lead minutes later off an assist from Kevin Cunningham.
Matt Streibel got the Lizards on the board midway through the first quarter, but Cunningham and McArdle would tack on two more as the Launch took a 4-1 lead into the second quarter. McArdle finished with a game-high five points on four goals and one assist.
The Launch continued to put the pressure on the Lizards after a Garrett Thul goal extended the lead to 5-1, but Jo-Jo Marasco was able to solve Florida goaltender Brett Queener to get the lead back to three. Both teams would trade goals one more time in the quarter, giving the Launch a 6-3 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the Lizards continued to have problems putting the ball in the back of the net. Making five saves in the third quarter alone, Queener and the Launch held its three-goal lead as each team only found pay dirt twice in the third quarter.
After the Launch had extended its lead to 10-5 early in the fourth, the Lizards fought back and scored three of the game's next four goals to cut the advantage to 11-8 with five minutes remaining, but that's all they would get as Queener and Launch held firm defensively to preserve the win.
Queener made 14 saves on the night for the Launch while opposing Lizards goaltender Adams stopped 12. Streibel and David Earl were the only Lizards who finished with multi-point nights as Streibel tallied one goal and one assist with Earl registering two goals.
Hall and Cunningham both finished with three points for the Launch who moved into a tie with the Rochester Rattlers for second place with a 4-2 record, trailing only the 5-1 Denver Outlaws. With the loss, the Lizards fall into a tie with the Boston Cannons for fourth place at 3-3.
Next week, the Launch will travel to North Carolina as they take on the Charlotte Hounds while the Lizards head west to take on the Outlaws.
