Bernhardt, Walters Lead Chesapeake Comeback Over New York
Jake Bernhardt and Joe Walters combined for five of the Bayhawks' six points in the fourth quarter as the team rallied from a three-goal deficit to top the Lizards on the road on Sunday afternoon.
Down 11-8 after three quarters, the Bayhawks, who were outside of playoff contention prior to the opening face-off with just three wins against eight losses going in, scored three unanswered to take the victory. Bernhardt fed Walters for the first of the frame, then scored a 2-point strike with five and a half minutes remaining to knot the score at 11 each. Almost exactly a minute later, Walters fed Peet Poillon for the game-winner.
The win improves the defending league champions to 4-8, while the Lizards fall to 7-5, two games back of league-leading Rochester with as many to play. New York will be in the playoffs regardless, as they hold tiebreakers over both Boston (two head-to-head wins) and Florida (goal differential in 1-1 season series). Rochester, Denver and the Lizards are in, while the final spot will be decided between Ohio (6-6), Boston and Florida (5-7 each).
Bernhardt scored twice, including his 2-point strike, and had an assist to join Walters (2G, 2A) with a team-best four points. Tyler Fiorito made 15 saves to earn the win in net, while Drew Westerveldt (2G), Matt Mackridees, Matt Mackrides and Matt Abbott (1G, 1A each) also chipped in.
Drew Adams made 14 saves in the loss for New York, which got a goal and three assists from Rob Pannell and three goals from Ned Crotty to lead a balanced effort that saw nine players with at least one goal.
