Colorado's Grant, Jones win January NLL Awards
from press releases
John Grant Jr. and Adam Jones of the undefeated Colorado Mammoth have been selected as the National Lacrosse League Player and Rookie of the Month, respectively, for January.
"John and Adam showed that they're a lethal, one-two punch," said Mammoth president and general manager Steve Govett. "They both had exceptional individual efforts all month."
Grant, now in his 12th NLL season and second with the Mammoth, leads the league in scoring with 16 goals and 21 assists for 37 points to help get Colorado off to a 4-0 start.
He became the fifth player in NLL history to register 1,000 career regular season points in Colorado's 13-12 overtime win against Calgary on Jan. 21. Grant is only 15 goals away from 500.
"Being 4-0 is most important," said Grant. "The fact that I'm recognized as the Player of the Month means I'm helping the team win."
Jones, selected third overall in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft out of Canisius, is third in the league with 12 goals and tied for fourth with 22 points. He also ranks second among first-year players with 21 loose balls.
Jones' best game was on Jan. 20, when he had five goals and three assists in a 13-12 victory at Edmonton. Both the rookie and the veteran have been a big part of a Mammoth team that is scoring an average of 15 goals per game, most in the league among teams that have played at least 3 games so far this season.
"My goal was to come in, find a role, and just help our team," said Jones. "To have this [award] and also be 4-0, I couldn't ask for a better start."
The monthly player award winners are selected by a vote of the league's general managers and head coaches.
