Rochester Hands Wings Fifth Straight Loss

from press release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Rochester Knighthawks (6-6) got back to .500 and earned some breathing room for second place in the East Division by handing the Philadelphia Wings (5-8) their fifth-straight loss with a 14-7 home win at The Blue Cross Arena on Saturday night. The game was televised live on CBS Sports Network, the first of six NLL games to be broadcast on the network for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

Both goalies were strong early on with big saves before Knighthawks veteran forward Mike Accursi opened the scoring 8:43 into the game. Wings forward Kevin Crowley responded 26 seconds later, but Rochester scored twice more, including a beautiful behind-the-back goal by Jimmy Purves, for a 3-1 lead after the first quarter as the Knighthawks led the rest of the way.

Rochester outscored the Wings 5-3 in the second quarter to take an 8-4 lead into halftime as Knighthawks goalie Matt Vinc, the NLL Defensive Player of the Week for Week #13, made 25 saves on 29 shots in the first half and finished with 45 saves on 52 shots.

The Wings pulled within 10-7 after the third quarter but were shut out in the final 15 minutes while the Knighthawks tacked on four more goals to secure the win.

Johnny Powless led the Knighthawks with a game-high three goals while Cody Jamieson had a game-high seven points (1+6) and Dan Dawson had five points (2+3).

No Wings player scored more than once as Brendan Mundorf (1+2), Kevin Ross (1+2) and Drew Westervelt (1+2) each had a team-high three points.
