Billings Signs One-Year Deal With Rock
from staff reports
TORONTO - The Toronto Rock have locked up their leading scorer from a year ago, as GM Terry Sanderson announced the signing of 3-year NLL veteran forward Garrett Billings to a one-year agreement. Billings said on Twitter that the deal would have been for a longer number of years had the league's new collective bargaining agreement not run out at the end of the season.
Last season, the Langley, BC native established a new team record with 114 points as well as setting a new NLL record with 82 assists. The accolades and accomplishments didn't end there, as he was runner-up in NLL MVP voting to John Grant Jr. of Colorado who set a new league scoring mark with 116 points. Billings' 114 points ranks third on the NLL all-time single-season scoring chart behind Grant (116) and Buffalo's John Tavares (115).
"I'm happy to be back with the Rock," said an exuberant Billings. "We're all ready to take another run at the Champion's Cup. It's an exciting time to be a part of this organization and we hope the city of Toronto is as ready as we are."
The 26-year old sniper's most impressive accomplishment may have come on March 31st in a game against the Buffalo Bandits. The Rock won the game 15-9 in enemy territory at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, NY, however Billings did something that no other player had done in the 26-year history of the NLL. He figured in on every one of the Rock's 15 goals on the evening, collecting 4 goals and 11 assists for 15 points. In the process setting a team record for most points in a game, falling just shy of the NLL record held by Buffalo's Mark Steenhuis of 17 points in a game.
"The individual success is always secondary to me," explained Billings. "For every single person in our organization, last season's goal was not fulfilled. We want to play another championship game in front of our fans in May and win another Champion's Cup."
Billings came just shy of his first Canadian Senior "A" Mann Cup championship in August with his hometown Langley Thunder of the Western Lacrosse Association this past summer. After jumping out to a 2-0 series lead against the Ontario champion Peterborough Lakers, the Thunder went on to lose the series in six games. Billings led the Mann Cup in scoring, registering 7 goals and 25 assists for 31 points in the six-game championship series.
"Getting that close to winning a championship and not winning is an awful feeling," said Billings of his first trip to a Mann Cup championship. "It's something I never want to feel again, I just want to win another championship and that journey begins in January in Toronto."
Billings is no stranger to championships having won two Minto Cup Canadian Junior A championships (Burnaby 2004 & 2005), an NCAA Division I title (Virginia 2006) and a Champion's Cup with the Rock in 2011.
