Hawks Down Mammoth to Move Up East Ladder

from Press Release

The Rochester Knighthawks defeated the Colorado Mammoth 11-9 tonight at the Pepsi Center. With the victory, the Knighthawks (6-3) moved one-half game behind Buffalo for first place in the East Division.

Rochester used a smothering defensive effort and timely goals to earn its second road win of the season. Goalie Matt Vinc turned aside 35 shots to earn the win in goal.
Colorado fell to 4-7 with the loss.

"They played well, especially in this place. It's a great place to play and a great atmosphere," said Knighthawks Head Coach Mike Hasen. "The guys persevered and 'Vno' came up with a couple of big saves and we had a couple of blocked shots by Paul (Dawson) and Sully (Jon Sullivan)."

Rochester never trailed and Stephen Keogh got Rochester off to great start with a career-high five goals and one assist in the first half. He credited veterans Dan Dawson and Cody Jamieson with his recent success.

"Talking to guys like 'Jammer' and Dawson they told me to just keep shooting," said Keogh. "My confidence is up right now and the ball has been dropping for me. It's all my teammates work, finding me open for great shots and luckily I have been picking the corners. It's been a good feeling and I hope it continues."

Paul Dawson was also feeling it tonight as he tied his career highs with two goals and three points. His first of the game gave the Knighthawks a 3-1 lead and his second gave Rochester an 8-3 advantage midway through the third quarter.

"It doesn't come very often, but I try to pride myself on (making sure) if there is an opportunity to make sure to bury it," said Dawson. "It was just one of those games where I had to chances – they arrived – and I got two goals."

His brother, Dan Dawson, played in his 188th straight game, putting him in a tie for second place in the National Lacrosse League for consecutive games played. He picked up five points (1+4) in the game.

Rochester built a 4-1 lead in the first as Keogh three times and Paul Dawson scored once. Keogh powered Rochester to a 6-0 run that spanned the first two quarters to give the Knighthawks a 7-2 lead at half.

In the third quarter, Rochester built a six-goal lead as Paul Dawson notched his second of the game and then fed Scott Campbell to give his team a 9-3 lead. Colorado would get within two twice in the fourth but the K-Hawks answered with key goals from Mike Accursi at 4:26 and Dan Dawson at 10:52.

Dylan Evans won the faceoff battle against Bob Snider, taking 13 of the 23 draws. The Mammoth were led by a five-point game from Casey Powell, who scored the game's last goal at 11:39 of the fourth. John Grant Jr. (1+3) and Drew Westervelt (3+1) each notched four points. Rookie goalie Dillon Ward made 29 saves in the loss.

The Knighthawks return home on Saturday, March 8th to host the Philadelphia Wings at 7:30 p.m. on Men's Health Night. Tickets are currently available by (585) 454-4295. The contest will also be broadcast live via Sportsradio 950 ESPN and www.sportsradio950espn.com.

The Knighthawks are again partnering with the Urology Associates of Rochester to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer. The team will hold an auction at The Blue Cross Arena as part of the fundraising efforts to benefit Zero - The Project to End Prostate Cancer and The Lipson Cancer Center at Rochester General. Fans with the winning bids will receive their Mardi Gras jersey or jerseys directly off the players' backs, following the game.
