Pannell's Tournament Among Team USA's Best Ever

For United States fans, Saturday's final loss to Canada at the FIL World Championship probably isn't one that will conjure fond memories in years to come, between the pace of play and the inability of Team USA to get its legs under it on offense until late in the contest.

But, with a goal and three assists, first-time Team USA member Rob Pannell etched his name in a prominent place in the record books for the United States, putting down one of the strongest tournaments in the storied history of the program.

His 32 points (17 goals, 15 assists) leave him tied with Michael Powell (2006) at second all-time for a member of Team USA in a tournament, nine behind Mark Millon's record of 41 set in 1994. That point total was also tops among all Blue Division players, one ahead of Miles Thompson of the Iroquois Nationals (16G, 15A). Christopher Zarins (Latvia) and Ari Sussman (Israel) led all players with 42 points while Tyler Buchan (China) had the highest average at 5.43 points per game.

In single-game terms, Pannell also placed himself near the top of the Team USA chart, scoring seven goals against the Iroquois Nationals in the teams' showdown at the end of group play. That is just two behind the all-time record set by Pat O'Meally against Australia in 1974 and tied for second with Brooks Sweet in 1982, also against Australia.
