The U.S. World Cup team has named midfielder Michele DeJuliis as its captain for the upcoming 2009 FIL Women's World Cup, which commences with opening ceremonies June 17 in Prague, Czech Republic.

DeJuliis, playing in her first World Cup after spending the last 15 years in the U.S. national teams program, will lead Team USA in its bid to recapture the gold medal. The U.S. lost to Australia in the 2005 gold medal match in Annapolis, Md.

"I don’t think any of us have seen the full potential of Michelle DeJuliis, and I don’t think we really will. I think you’ll be able to see the potential physically on the field, but to know what happens behind the scenes with people like that -- she’s an irreplaceable piece that can draw so many great things out of others," said Team USA head coach Sue Heether.

Arriving in Prague this week, the U.S. has also declared its official 18-player roster to the FIL. Click here.
