Haudenosaunee Earns Date with Team USA in FIL Quarters

Oshawa, Ont. - Team USA opens its elimination round schedule on Thursday afternoon, taking on the Haudenosaunee at 12:30 in the quarterfinal round of the FIL World Cup here in Oshawa. The No. 8 seed Haudenosaunee earned their way into the quarterfinals and a date with the defending champions by topping No. 9 Ireland on Wednesday, 19-3.
USA went 4-0 in pool play, toppling England, Wales, Australia and Canada by a combined margin of 67-20. Only Australia finished the game within ten goals of the U.S. team, which has used a stifling defense to dominate, holding both Wales and Canada to two goals each.
Haudenosaunee went 4-1 in pool play, with a 15-11 loss to Japan its only blemish. In Wednesday's win over Ireland, Erin Francis had three goals and three assists and Dawn Easley scored four times to help jump to a 10-2 lead by the half.
In other action on Wednesday, Japan suffered its first loss of the tournament, falling to Scotland, 13-12. Scotland will face Australia in quarterfinal play on Thursday, closing out the day's action with an 8 p.m. face-off.
Israel and Wales also advanced to the quarterfinals on Wednesday, topping New Zealand and Austria, respectively. Israel, a first-time tournament entrant, beat New Zealand by a 12-9 score and will face Canada at 5:30 p.m. Wales blanked Austria 21-0, advancing to face England at 3 p.m. on Thursday, a team which beat them 9-4 in pool play on July 12th.
In other games, Latvia earned its first win in FIL World Cup play, topping Hong Kong by a goal in two overtimes, with Evija Rozite scoring the game-winner. Latvia scored four of the final five goals of regulation to rally from a 10-7 deficit and send the game to extra time. Netherlands defeated Finland and Korea topped Sweden in the day's other two contests in the diamond bracket.
